How does the Bamboo IH rice cooker cook differently to my old rice cooker?
Induction Heating (IH) rice cookers cook in a fundamentally different way from conventional rice cookers. If you're moving from a conventional rice cooker to an IH model, you may find that you need to make some small adjustments to the amount of water you use until you find the perfect balance for your preferred rice and texture.
How Does IH Cooking Work?
A conventional rice cooker typically uses a heating element beneath the inner bowl. Heat is transferred from the heating element, through the bowl and into the rice and water.
An IH rice cooker works differently. Instead of relying solely on a traditional heating element, magnetic coils generate an electromagnetic field around the inner bowl. This induces eddy currents within the bowl itself, causing the bowl to heat directly.
This provides rapid, highly responsive and more evenly distributed heat throughout the cooking vessel.
Because the heat is generated directly in the inner bowl, IH technology can respond quickly to changes in temperature and gives the rice cooker much greater control over the cooking process.
You May Need to Adjust Your Water
Because IH cooking applies heat differently, rice can sometimes behave slightly differently compared with cooking the same rice in a conventional rice cooker.
If you're using an IH rice cooker for the first time, don't be concerned if you need to make a small adjustment to your usual water volume.
The most common adjustments are:
Rice is too soggy or wet → use slightly less water
If your cooked rice is softer, wetter or more moist than you prefer, try reducing the amount of water slightly on your next cooking cycle.
Rice is too dry or overcooked → use slightly more water
If your rice is coming out too dry or firm, try adding a small amount of additional water.
Make adjustments gradually rather than changing the water volume dramatically. Different rice varieties, brands, ages and storage conditions can all affect how much water the rice absorbs.

IH rice cookers can also offer energy-efficiency advantages compared with many conventional rice cookers.
An IH cooker can have a higher wattage rating than a conventional model, but wattage alone doesn't tell you how much energy a cooker uses during a complete cooking cycle.
With IH technology, heat is generated directly within the inner bowl, rather than being transferred primarily from a separate heating element beneath it. This allows heat to be applied rapidly and directly to the cooking vessel and its contents.
As a result, less energy can be lost through indirect heat transfer, and the cooker can respond quickly to temperature changes during the cooking process.
For this reason, it is important not to assume that a higher wattage IH rice cooker automatically consumes more electricity overall. Power rating and total energy consumption are different measurements.
