Rice gets stuck in the holes of my rice washing bowl

Simply put, if rice is getting stuck in the holes of the inner bowl during washing, the washing technique may need a small adjustment.

The easiest way to describe the correct technique is to think of it like gold panning.

  1. Place the rice in the bottom of the inner bowl.

  2. Add water to the bowl.

  3. Gently swirl the rice and water together. You can do this by carefully moving the bowl or by using your hand.

  4. Allow the rice to settle back into the centre of the bowl.

  5. Once the rice has settled, gently tilt the bowl so that the water drains away through the holes while the rice remains in the centre.

  6. Repeat the process until the rice has been washed sufficiently.

The important part is to allow the rice to settle before draining the water. If the bowl is tilted while the rice is still moving around, individual grains can be carried towards the drainage holes and become lodged in them.

When done correctly, the rice should remain gathered in the centre of the bowl while the water drains through the holes, so very little or no rice should become trapped.

We have a video demonstrating the recommended technique here:
