Can I add salt to the rice?

es, you can add salt to your rice – but we recommend adding it after the rice has finished cooking, rather than adding salt to the cooking water.

Adding salt to rice is relatively common in British and European cooking, but in many Asian cuisines, rice is traditionally cooked without salt and served as a neutral accompaniment to other foods.

Why cook the rice without salt?

Salt can affect the properties of the cooking water, including its boiling point and other characteristics of the cooking environment. While the effect of normal quantities of salt is relatively small, our rice cookers are carefully calibrated to cook rice using specific combinations of rice, water, temperature and cooking time.

For this reason, we recommend keeping things simple: cook the rice without salt and season it afterwards if you prefer.

Try it without salt first!

Rice cooked in one of our fuzzy logic rice cookers is quite different from rice that has simply been boiled in a saucepan.

Our rice cookers use carefully controlled cooking cycles to develop the texture, aroma and natural flavour of the rice. The result should be delicious rice that doesn't necessarily need seasoning.

So, before reaching for the salt shaker, try your rice as it comes out of the rice cooker. You may find that you prefer the natural flavour and texture of properly cooked rice.

If you still prefer a little seasoning, simply add salt after cooking, once the rice is ready to serve.

Our recommendation: cook first, taste second, then season to your preference.
