Is there arsenic in your rice?

Like many foods, rice can contain naturally occurring arsenic, particularly inorganic arsenic, because rice plants are particularly efficient at absorbing arsenic from soil and water. However, the amount can vary considerably depending on where and how the rice is grown.

Arsenic is not unique to rice, and exposure to arsenic in the overall diet can come from a variety of foods and drinks. It can also be present in foods such as meat, fish, fruit and fruit juices, depending on environmental factors and how those foods are produced.

Research has found that the geographical origin of rice can make a significant difference to its arsenic levels. Studies, including research from the University of California, have found that Thai Hom Mali (Jasmine) rice and Basmati rice grown in India and Pakistan can have comparatively low levels of arsenic when compared with rice grown in some other regions.

This is particularly relevant to the rice we use. Our Hom Mali rice is grown in Thailand, while our Basmati rice is grown in Pakistan, giving us a clear source and geographical origin for these varieties.

It is also important not to interpret the presence of arsenic as meaning that rice is inherently unsafe to eat. Arsenic occurs naturally in the environment, and the potential health risk depends on factors including the type of arsenic, concentration, frequency and duration of exposure, as well as overall dietary intake.

Research into dietary arsenic exposure and its potential health effects is ongoing. There has also been insufficient evidence to justify a blanket recommendation that people should stop eating rice. Rice remains an important staple food for billions of people around the world, and there is no need to avoid it simply because arsenic can be detected in some rice.

As with any food, a varied and balanced diet is a sensible approach. If you regularly eat large quantities of rice and are concerned about dietary arsenic exposure, varying the types and origins of rice you eat can be a practical way of reducing prolonged exposure to any one source.
