Is rice good for you?
Rice is one of the oldest cultivated crops in the world, with historical evidence of rice cultivation in China dating back thousands of years. Over the centuries, it has become one of the world's most important staple foods and today forms a fundamental part of the diet of billions of people, particularly across South, Southeast and East Asia.
In many Asian cultures, rice is so deeply connected with everyday life that the word for "rice" and "food" can be interchangeable in the local language.
Thousands of Different Rice Varieties
Rice is far more diverse than many people realise. There are four broad categories of cultivated rice commonly recognised worldwide:
Indica – generally associated with longer, slender grains and widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions.
Japonica – typically shorter and rounder grains, often with a softer or stickier texture when cooked.
Aromatic – varieties known for their distinctive natural fragrances, including famous types such as Basmati and Jasmine.
Glutinous – also known as sticky or sweet rice, which develops a particularly sticky, chewy texture when cooked.
It is thought that there are tens of thousands of rice varieties around the world, although only a relatively small number are widely cultivated and commercially available.
This incredible diversity is one of the reasons rice is such a fascinating food. Different varieties can vary enormously in grain shape, colour, aroma, texture, flavour and cooking characteristics.
But Is Rice Healthy?
Absolutely – rice can be a nutritious part of a balanced diet.
The nutritional profile varies considerably depending on the type of rice and how it is processed. Wholegrain varieties such as brown rice and Riceberry retain more of the grain's outer layers, while white rice provides an easily digestible source of carbohydrate and energy.
Rice is also naturally gluten-free, making it suitable for people who need or choose to avoid gluten.
There is far more to the nutritional story of rice than we can cover here, so we've created dedicated guides if you'd like to explore the subject in more detail.
