My rice cup only goes up to 160ml on the scale - do I have the wrong cup?

The measuring cups supplied with our rice cookers are traditionally based on the 180 ml rice cup standard.

It is important to note that the 180 ml capacity is measured when the cup is filled all the way to the brim. Although the measurement markings on the cup may only extend to 160 ml, the cup itself has a total capacity of 180 ml when completely filled.

How to measure a full cup of rice

When a recipe or user manual calls for one full rice measuring cup, make sure you:

  1. Fill the measuring cup right to the brim with rice.

  2. Do not stop at the 160 ml marking.

  3. Level off the rice at the top of the cup so you have a consistent 180 ml measure.

Using less than a full cup when the instructions call for one full cup can change the rice-to-water ratio and may result in inconsistent cooking results.

Remember: a full rice measuring cup is 180 ml — fill it to the brim and level off the rice.

Rice Measuring Cups

Rice measuring cups can vary in colour, shape and markings, depending on the manufacturer and rice cooker model. However, most traditional rice cooker measuring cups are based on the 180 ml rice cup standard.

The most important point is that the stated capacity is measured when the cup is filled to the brim. Simply filling the cup to a lower measurement marking does not give you a full rice cup.

How to measure a full rice cup

When a recipe or rice cooker instruction calls for one full rice measuring cup:

  1. Fill the cup right to the brim with rice.

  2. Make sure the rice reaches the very top of the cup.

  3. Level off the rice across the top to ensure a consistent measurement.

  4. Use this as your full 180 ml rice cup.

This method provides a consistent volume of rice and helps maintain the correct rice-to-water ratio during cooking.

Although different rice measuring cups may look quite different, filling to the brim and levelling off the rice is the key to obtaining the correct full-cup volume.

Remember: a full rice measuring cup is 180 ml — fill it to the brim, then level it off.
