What setting do I use to cook sticky or glutinous rice?
Sticky rice, also known as glutinous rice or sweet rice, is a short-grain type of rice, but it requires a different amount of water from ordinary short-grain rice.
Despite the name, glutinous rice does not contain gluten. The term refers to the characteristic sticky, chewy texture the rice develops when cooked.
Cooking Sticky Rice in a Yum Asia Rice Cooker
If you are using a Yum Asia rice cooker, select the Short Grain cooking function.
However, don't simply use the normal short-grain water ratio. Sticky/glutinous rice requires a different amount of water, so follow the water-level instructions provided in the user manual for your specific Yum Asia rice cooker model.
Cooking Sticky Rice in a Zojirushi Rice Cooker
If you are using a Zojirushi rice cooker, select the Sweet cooking function and use the corresponding Sweet/Sweet Rice water-level marking on the inner bowl.
Using the correct cooking programme and water level is important because sticky rice behaves differently from ordinary short-grain rice.
In short:
Yum Asia: Short Grain function + follow the sticky/glutinous rice water guidance in your model's manual.
Zojirushi: Sweet function + use the Sweet water-level marking on the inner bowl.
Using the correct programme and water level will help produce the characteristic soft, chewy and sticky texture that glutinous rice is known for.
